Which Photo Frame Size is Right for Your Wall?

The 2/3 Rule — The Most Reliable Sizing Method

Interior designers use the "two-thirds rule" to size art and frames for walls: a piece of art or a framed photo should span approximately two-thirds of the width of the wall or the furniture it hangs above.

• Above a 48-inch sofa → ideal frame/art width: ~32 inches → use 18×24 or 20×30 as a single frame, or a gallery wall of smaller frames spanning that width
• Above a 36-inch king bed headboard → ideal frame width: ~24 inches → 18×24 inch portrait or a pair of 12×18 portraits
• For a dining room accent wall → 60+ inch art width → consider a 24×36 inch panoramic, or a grid of multiple frames

Frame Size by Room

Living Room

12×18 inch or 18×24 inch. These are the two most popular living room frame sizes in India. The 12×18 is ideal for rooms with 9-foot ceilings; upgrade to 18×24 for 10-foot-plus ceilings or large open-plan spaces. Gallery walls in the living room typically use 8×10 as the standard module, mixed with one or two 12×18 statement pieces.

Bedroom

8×10 or 12×18 inch. Above the bed, a single 12×18 works beautifully as a centrepiece. Pairs of 8×10 frames on either side of the headboard create a balanced, hotel-room elegance. On a bedside table, 5×7 is the natural size — intimate, personal, and proportionate to the surface.

Study / Home Office

A4 or 8×10 inch. Certificates, awards and diplomas almost always come in A4 or letter size — the A4 frame is designed for exactly this. For wall-mounted motivational prints or photos, 8×10 inch is the most common office wall frame size in India.

Puja Room / Mandir Corner

5×7, 8×10, or 12×18 inch. For deity images on a temple shelf or mandir ledge, 5×7 is the compact workhorse — fits easily, clear to see from nearby. For a wall behind the mandir, 12×18 creates the right devotional presence. For a dedicated puja room feature wall, 18×24 inch god frames make a genuinely sacred statement.

Standard Photo Frame Sizes in India — What Photo Labs Give You

Most photo labs in India — online and at physical shops — use the following standard sizes:

• 4R (4×6 inch): The most common "standard print" size — what you get if you order photos without specifying a size.
• 5R (5×7 inch): Slightly larger, often the "medium print" option at photo labs.
• 8R (8×10 inch): Often called "large print" at photo labs; widely available.
• A4 (21×29.7 cm): Standard document/portrait print; available at all labs and from any desktop printer.
• 12×18 inch: Available at professional labs; our most popular online frame size for India.

How Photo Resolution Affects Print Size

Bigger frames need higher-resolution photos. Here's the minimum pixel count for sharp 300 DPI printing at each common size:

• 4×6 inch: 1200×1800 pixels minimum
• 5×7 inch: 1500×2100 pixels minimum
• 8×10 inch: 2400×3000 pixels minimum
• A4: 2480×3508 pixels minimum
• 12×18 inch: 3600×5400 pixels minimum
• 18×24 inch: 5400×7200 pixels minimum

Any modern smartphone (12MP+) produces photos at 4000×3000 pixels or higher — well above what's needed for sharp 12×18 inch printing. If your photo was taken on an older phone or heavily compressed, we'll check it before printing and let you know if there's a quality concern.

A Quick Note on Frame vs Print Size

An important distinction: the frame size is the outer dimension of the frame. The print size is typically slightly smaller, fitting inside a mat (mount) or directly behind the acrylic/glass. When you order a "12×18 frame," the visible print area inside the frame is approximately 11×17 inches (with a mat) or exactly 12×18 inches (without a mat, full bleed). We'll always confirm the visible print dimensions before printing for your order.
